SEISMIC VALVES The two most popular and "APPROVED" seismic earthquake shut-off valves are described in more detail on this page. They are:
<> The CALIFORNIA VALVE/KOSO (Pictured above - on the left)... <> The SAFE-T-QUAKE Valve (Pictured above - on the right)...
THE CALIFORNIA VALVE/KOSO The California Valve/KOSO seismic valves are gas shut-off valves that are intended to automatically close in the event of an earthquake to prevent gas flow into a structure where earthquake damage may have occurred. They are designed to automatically shut-off the gas as soon as an earthquake reaches a force capable of damaging gas lines...
The valves do not use any internal or external source of electrical power. They are designed to remain closed - after actuation - until they are manually reset - which is accomplished by simply turning an exposed end of the reset shaft with the appropriate tool, depending on the model. Also, a very high flow-efficiency design eliminates any gas pressure drop problem...
All California Valve/KOSO is designed for horizontal mounting. The valve consists of a swing check-valve arrangement with an acceleration-sensitive triggering mechanism. The trip mechanism consists of a steel ball resting on a tapered cup-shaped support. The horizontal motion of an earthquake causes the ball to move from the center of the support. This allows the balls mass to act upon the movable pipe of the trip mechanism, activating the valve, and initiating closure. Springs assist the valve flapper to close - and gas pressure assists in holding the valve in the closed position. The trip mechanism is factory set and sealed. A sight glass is provided so that the OPEN or CLOSED indicator can be seen, and the trip mechanism status of the valve can be easily determined...
Pacific Seismic Products, Inc, (PSP) has been manufacturing the California Valve/KOSO since 1978. Serving residential, commercial, and industrial uses, over 180,000 KOSO automatic shut-off valves have been installed in California over the last two decades...
The California Valve/KOSO comes in models ranging from 0.75" to 4" diameter (NPT), and from 2" to 6" diameter (Flanged), covering maximum pressures from 0.5 psi to 60 psi. All California Valve/KOSO's are designed to operate from -10 degrees F to +150 degrees F. Every valve's trigger-point is precision tested by computerized seismic simulation. NOTE: The valve can only be re-opened by MANUAL reset. Aftershocks can not re-open the valve...

THE SAFE-T-QUAKE VALVE SAFE-T-QUAKE, a California Corporation, has been manufacturing earthquake shut-off valves since 1976. Their corporate headquarters is located in Northridge, California...
SAFE-T-QUAKE manufactures valves for installation on all residential, commercial, and industrial structures, with valve sizes ranging from 0.75" to 2.0" diameters, with pressure capabilities ranging from 25 psi to 60 psi. All SAFE-T-QUAKE valves are designed for vertical mounting...
Valve bodies are cast from aluminum and machined to all required standards. SAFE-T-QUAKE valves are designed to actuate and shut-off the gas supply to buildings when subjected, at the point of installation, to earthquakes that are severe enough to cause damage to gas lines. There are no parts in the valve assembly that will rust or corrode. SAFE-T-QUAKE valves have a limited LIFETIME warranty...
